This article introduces how to properly select stepper motors and drivers:
Determine the required torque: Holding torque is one of the key parameters for stepper motor selection. Motors with higher torque are required for heavy loads. Generally, a higher torque rating corresponds to a larger motor frame size.
Determine the operating speed of the motor: If high rotational speed is required, select a motor with higher phase current and lower inductance to boost power input. Meanwhile, choose a driver that supports a higher supply voltage.
Select the motor mounting frame size: Models such as 57, 86, 110, which are mainly determined by torque requirements.
Clarify requirements for positioning accuracy and vibration: Confirm whether microstepping is needed and determine the required microstep resolution.
Select the driver according to the motor current, microstep setting and power supply voltage.
A stepper motor is an open-loop control component that converts electrical pulse signals into angular or linear displacement. Structurally, there are three main types: variable reluctance, permanent magnet and hybrid stepper motors.
A stepper motor driver is an actuator that converts electrical pulses into angular displacement. When the stepper driver receives a pulse signal, it drives the stepper motor to rotate by a fixed angle (known as the step angle) in the set direction. The motor rotates incrementally in fixed angular steps.
The angular displacement can be controlled by regulating the number of pulses to achieve precise positioning. Meanwhile, the rotation speed and acceleration of the motor can be adjusted by controlling the pulse frequency, realizing speed regulation and positioning.
